How do industrial Tunnel washers work?

A tunnel washing machine operates like a continuous assembly line, moving separate batches of linen automatically through a long, divided cylinder.

Separate batch washer design

The PowerTrans Vario is Kannegiesser’s main tunnel washer models. It is a “Separate Batch Washer”’. It works like individual washing with different machines but it’s automated for an overall higher output and lowered consumption.  

The individual processing of each batch is based on ratio metric dosing and consistent bath separation, so every batch is treated individually according to its category and true batch size. This results in individualized water levels, chemicals, mechanical action and temperature.

For laundries processing incompatible laundry types, this means all batches can be process simultaneously, thus removing the need for empty compartments and greatly increase your equipment efficiency.

With compartments, laundry batches that would typically need to be separated can now be processed simultaneously in different containers.

QuickExchange compartments

PowerTrans Vario compartments are optimized to enable more active wash time by accelerating auxilliaty processes: the QuickExchange compartment.

Those are made of two drum levels: an inner drum (1) and an outer drum (2). Specialty formed CareWash perforations (3) along the whole drum width allows for the faster mixing of liquor and textiles. Integrated heating and drain system (4) system at the compartment level for a fully individualized batch processing.

Engineered ActiveDrop mechanical action

To generate the washing effect, the textiles go through a sequence of drum movements called the ActiveDrop system that allow to work deep into the fibers:

  1. LIFT textiles are effectively lifted out of the wash liquor by large lifters and a powerful chain drive. Frequent changes of direction ensure a constant turn over of the linen.
  2. THROW, when straight drum walls without a limiting center core allow for a dynamic throwing of the batch. This is a prerequisite for an effective and uniform washing effect regardless of the batchsize.
  3. COMPRESS part of the process is based on the large perforated area with gentle CareWash perforation, which ensures a fast liquor exchange and increases the turbulence.
